| No. 47 - Recitativ | (Evangelist) Da überandwortete er ihn, daß er gekreuziget würde. Sie nahmen aber Jesum und führeten ihn hin. Und er trug sein Kreuz, und ging hinaus zur Stätte, die da heißet Schädelstätt' welche heißet auf Ebräisch Golgotha.
| The he delivered Him to be crucified. They took Jesus and led Him away. And He carried His Cross and went to the place, called Place of the Skull, which is named in Hebrew Golgotha.

No. 49 - Recitativ | (Evangelist) Allda kreuzigen sie ihn, und mit ihm zween Andere zu beiden Seiten, Jesum aber mitten inne. Pilatus aber schreib eine Überschrift, und stezte sie auf das Kreuz, und war geschrieben: Jesus von Nazareth, der Juden König! Diese Überschrift lasen viel Juden denn die Stätte war nahe bei der Stadt, da Jesus gekreuziget ist. Und es war geschrieben auf Ebräische, griechische und lateinische Sprache. Da sprachen die Hohenpriester der Juden zu Pilato:
| And there they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on either side, but Jesus in the middle. Pilate wrote a superscription and put it on the Cross, and the writing was: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews! Many Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate:

No. 53 - Recitativ | (Evangelist) Die Kriegsknechte aber, da sie Jesum gekreuziget hatten, nahmen seine Kleider und machten vier Teile, einem jeglichen Kreigsknechte sein Teile, dazu auch den Rock uber war ungenähet, von oben an gewürket durch und durch. Da sprachen sie untereinander:
| Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, one to each soldier, and also His robe. But the robe was seamless, woven from the top throughout. Therefore they said among themselves:

Solches taten die Kriegesknechte. Es stund aber bei dem Kreuze Jeus seine Mutter und seiner Mutter Schwester, Maria, Cleophas' Weib, und Maria Magdalena. Da nun Jesus seine Mutter sahe und den Jünger dabei stehen, den er lieb hatte, spricht er zu seiner Mutter: |

He still thought about His Mother, set for Her a guardian. O man, do what is right, love God and man. Then die without any grief, and do not be sad. Da stund ein Gefässe voll Essigs. Sie fülleten aber einen Schwamm mit Essig, und legten ihn um einen Isoppen und hielten es ihm dar zum Munde. Da nun Jesus den Essig genommen hatte, sprach er:
And from that hour the disciple took Her into his care. After this, when Jesus knew that everything was already done, so that the Scriptures would be fulfilled, He said: |
There stood a vessel full of vinegar. They filled a sponge with vinegar and put it around hyssop and held it to his mouth. Now when Jesus had taken the vinegar, He said:

| No. 60 - Aria | (Bass, chorus, strings, continuo) Baß: | Mein teurer Heiland, lass dich fragen, da du nunmehr an's Kreuz geschlagen, und selbst gesaget: es ist vollbracht! Bin ich vom Sterben frei gemacht? Kann ich durch deine Pein und Sterben das Himmelreich ererben? Ist aller Welt Erlösung da? Du kannst vor Schmerzen zwar nichts sagen, doch neigest du das Haupt und sprichst stillschweigend: Ja, ja!
Chor: Bass: | My dear Savior, let me ask Thee, now that Thou art nailed to the Cross, and hast Thyself said: It is finished! And I made free of dying? Can I through Thy pain and dying inherit the Kingdom of Heaven? Is redemption of the whole world there? | And see there: the veil of the Temple was torn in two parts from the top to the bottom. And the earth quaked and the rocks were rent, and graves opened, and many bodies of saints arose!

No. 64 - Recitativ | (Evangelist) Die Juden aber dieweil es der Rüsttag war, daß nicht die Leichname am Kreuze bleiben den Sabbat über (denn desselbigen Sabbatstag war sehr groß) baten sie Pilatum, daß ihre Beine gebrochen, und sie abgenommen würden. Da kamen die Kriegsknechte und brachen dem ersten die Beine, und dem andern, der mit ihm gekreuziget war. Als sie aber zu Jesu kamen, und sie sahen, daß er schon gestorben war, brachen sie ihm die Beine nicht, sondern der Kriegsknechte einer eröffnete seine Seite mit einem Speer, und alsobald ging Blut und Wasser heraus. Und der das gesehen hat, der hat es bezeuget, und sein Zeugnis ist wahr, und derselbige weiß, daß er die Wahrheit saget, auf daß ihr glaubet. Denn solches ist geschehen, auf daß die Schrift erfüllet würde: Ihr sollet ihm kein Bein zerbrechen, und abermal spricht eine andere Schrift: Sie werden sehen, in welchen sie gestochen haben.
| The Jews, however, because it was the preparation, so that the bodies should not remain on the cross over the Sabbath (for the same Sabbath Day was very high) asked Pilate that their legs be broken and that they would be taken down. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other one who was crucified with Him but when they came to Jesus, and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs, but one of the soldiers opened His side with a spear, and thereupon blood and water went out. And he who has seen that he has testified to it, and his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth, so that you believe. For such happened, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Ye shalt no break any bone of His, and again another Scripture saith: They will see Him whom they pierced.

No. 66 - Recitativ | (Evangelist) Darnach bat Pilatum Joseph von Arimathia, der ein Jünger Jesu war (doch heimlich, aus Furcht von den Juden), daß er möchte abnehmen den Leichnam Jesu. Und Pilatus erlaubete es. Derwegen kam er und nahm den Leichnam Jesu herab. Es kam auch Nikodemus, der vormals in der Nacht zu Jesu kommen war, und brachte Myrrhen und Aloen untereinander, bei hundert Pfunden. Da nahmen sie den Leichnam Jesu, und bunden ihn in leinen Tücher mit Spezereien, wie die Juden pflegen zu begraben. Es war aber an der Stätte, da er gekreuziget ward, ein Garten, und im Garten ein neu Grab, in welches niemand je gelegen war. Daselbst hin legten sie Jesum, um des Rüsttags willen der Juden, dieweil das Grab nahe war.
| After that, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but secretly, out of fear of the Jews), asked Pilate whether he might take down the body of Jesus. And Pilate allowed that. Therefore he came and took down the body of Jesus. Nicodemus came also; he who had come earlier to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight. Then they took the body of Jesus, bound it in linen cloth with spices, as the Jews are accustomed to bury. There was in the place where He was crucified a garden, and in the garden a new sepulchre into which no one had ever been laid. Therein they laid Jesus because of the Jews' preparation day and because the sepulchre was near.

Rest well, rest well, you sacred bones, | over which I do not now weep any longer. Rest well, rest well, and bring me also to rest. The grave, that is intended for you and contains no further agony, opens Heaven and closes Hell to me. No. 68 - Choral
