No. 21 - Choral
Christus, der uns selig macht, Kein Bös's hat begangen, Der ward für uns in der Nacht, als ein Dieb gefangen, Geführt vor gottlose Leuxt' und fälschlich verklaget! Verlacht, verhöhnt und verspeit, wie denn die Schrift saget.	Christ, who makes us blessed, has committed no evil. He was for us at night taken as a thief, led before godless people and falsely accused, jeered at, mocked and spat upon as Holy Writ saith.
No. 22 - Recitativ (Evangelist, Pilate)
Da führeten sie Jesum von Kaiphas vor das Richthaus. Und es war frühe. Und sie gingen nicht in das Richthaus, auf daß sie nicht unrein würden, sondern Ostern essen möchten. Da ging Pilatus zu ihnen hinaus. Und sprach: Was bringet ihr für Klage wider diesen Menschen? Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm:	Then they led Jesus fro Caiaphas to before the judgement hall, lest they should become unclean, but that they might eat at the Passover. Then Pilate went out to them and said: What kind of accusation do you bring against this Man? They answered, saying unto him:

Wäre dieser nicht ein Ubeltäter, wir hätten dir ihn nicht überwortet.	If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.
No. 24 - Recitativ (Evangelist, Pilate)
Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: So nehmet ihr ihn hin, und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetze. Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm:	Then said Pilate to them: Then take Him away, and judge Him according to your Law. Then the Jews said to him:

Wir dürfen niemand, niemand töten.	We may not kill anyone, anyone.
No. 26 - Recitativ (Evangelist, Jesus, Pilate)
Auf daß erfüllet würde das Wort Jesu, welches er sagte, da er deutete, welches Todes er sterben würde. Da ging Pilatus wieder hinein in das Richthaus und rief Jesu und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der Juden König? Jesus antwortete: Redest du das von dir selbst oder haben's dir Andere von mir gesagt? Pilatus antwortete: Bin ich ein Jude? Dein Volk und die Hohenpriester haben dich mir überantwortet; was hast du getan? Jesus antwortete: Mein Reich ist nicht von dieser Welt, meine Diener würde darob kämpfen, daß ich den Juden nicht überantwortet würde! Aber, nun ist mein Reich von dannen.	So that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled, which He said, when He indicated what death He would die. Then Pilate went again into the judgement hall, calling to Jesus and speaking to Him: Art Thou the King of the Jews? Jesus answered: Sayest thou that thing of thyself or did others tell it to thee of Me? Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy people and the high priests have delivered Thee to me; what hast Thou done? Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight so that I would not be delivered to the Jews! But now My kingdom is not from there.
No. 27 - Choral
Ach großer König, groß zu allein Zeiten, wie kann ich g'nugsam diese Treu' ausbreiten? Kein's Menschen Herze mag indeß ausdenken, was dir zu schenken. Ich kann's mit meinen Sinnen nicht erreichen, womit doch ein Erbarmen zu veggleigen. Wie kann ich dir denn deine Liebestaten in Werk erstatten?	Ah, great King, great at all times, how can I sufficiently proclaim this fidelity? No human heart may think of what to give Thee. I cannot with my mind grasp what to compare with Thy compassion. How can I repay Thy loving deeds in my own doings?
No. 28 - Recitativ (Evangelist, Jesus, Pilate)
Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm: So bist du dennoch ein König? Jesus antwortete: Du sagst's; Ich bin ein König. Ich bin dazu geboren und in die Welt kommen, daß ich die Wahrheit zeugen soll. Wer aus der Wahrheit ist, der höret meine Stimme. Spricht Pilatus zu ihm: Was ist Wahrheit? Und da er das gesaget, ging er wieder hinaus zu den Juden et spricht zu ihnen: Ich finde keine Schuld an ihm. Ihr habt aber eine Gewohnheit, daß ich euch Einen losgebe; Wollt ihr nun daß ich euch der Juden König losgebe? Da schrieen sie wieder allesamt und sprachen:	Then Pilate said to Him: So Thou art a King then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest I am a King. I was born to that end and have come into the world so that I should bear witness of the truth. Whoever is of the truth heareth My voice. Pilate says to him: What is truth? And when he said that, he went out again to the Jews, saying to them: I find no fault in Him. But you have a custom, that I should release one to you. Do you now want me to release the King of the Jews to you? Then they all cried out again, saying:

Nicht diesen, sondern Barrabas!	Not this Man, but Barabbas!
No. 30 - Recitativ (Evangelist)
Barrabas aber war ein Mörder. Da nahm Pilatus Jesum und geisselte ihn.	But Barabbas was a murderer. Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.
No. 31 - Arioso (Bass, 2 violes d'amour, lute, continuo)
Betrachte, meine Seel', mit änstlichem Vergnügen, Mit bittern Lasten Hart beklemmt von Herzen, Dein höchstes Gut in Jesu Schmerzen, Wie dir auf Dornen, so ihn stechen, Die Himmelsschlüßelblume blüht; Du kannst viel süße Frucht von seiner Wermut brechen, Drum sieh' ohn' Unterlass auf ihn.	Consider, my soul, with anxious joy, with bitter burdens and hard oppressed at heart, Thy highest good in Jesus's pains. Consider how for thee, on thorns which stab Him the primrose flower blooms. Thou canst gather much sweet fruit from His bitterness. Therefore look to Him incessantly.
No. 32 - Aria (Tenor, 2 violes d'amour, continuo)
Erwäge, wie sein blutgefärbter Rücker in allen Stücken, Dem Himmel gleiche geht! Daran, nachdem die Wasserwogen Von uns'rer Sündflut sich verzogen, Der allerschörste Regenbogen Als Gottes Gradenzeichen steht.	Consider, how His bloodstained back in all parts is like the sky! In it, after the waves of the tide of our sins has gone, the most beautiful rainbow appears as a sign of God's pardon.

Und die Kriegsknechte flochten eine Krone von Dornen, und setzten sie auf sein Haupt, und legten ihm ein Purpurkleid an, und sprachen:	And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and placed a purple robe on Him, saying:

Sei gegrüsset, lieber Judenkönig!	Greetings, dear King of the Jews!
No. 35 - Recitativ (Evangelist, Pilate)
Und gaben ihm Backenstreiche. Da ging Pilatus wieder heraus und sprach zu ihnen. Sehet, ich führe ihn heraus zu euch, daß ihr erkennet, daß ich keine Schuld an ihm finde. Also ging Jesus heraus, und trug eine Dornenkrone und Purpurkleid. Und er sprach zu ihnen: Sehet, welch ein Mensch! Da ihn die Hohenpriester und die Diener sahen schrieen sie und sprachen:	And they gave him Him slaps on the cheeks. Then Pilate went out again and spoke to them: Behold, I bring Him out to you, so that ye may know that I find no blame in him. So Jesus went out, wearing a crown of thorns and a purple robe. And [Pilate] said unto them: Behold, what a man! When the high priests and officers saw Him, they cried out saying:

Kreuzige, kreuzige!	Crucify, crucify!
No. 37 - Recitativ (Evangelist, Pilate)
Pilatus sprach zu ihnen: Nehmet ihr ihn hin und kreuziget ihn; denn ich finde keine Schuld an ihm! Die Juden antworteten ihm:	Pilate spoke to them: Take Him away and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him! The Jews answered him:

Wir haben ein Gesetz, und nach dem Gesetz soll er sterben, denn er hat sich selbst zu Gottes Sohn gemacht.	We have a law, and according to that law He should die, for He hath made Himself the Son of God.
No. 39 - Recitativ (Evangelist, Jesus, Pilate)
Da Pilatus das Wort hörete, fürchtet, er sich noch mehr. Und ging wieder hinein in das Richthaus und sprach zu Jesu: Von wannen bist du? Aber Jesus gab ihm keine Antwort. Da spracht Pilatus zu ihm: Redest du nicht mit mir? Weißest du nicht, daß ich Macht habe, dich zu kreuzigen, und Macht habe, dich loszugeben? Jesus antwortete: Du hättest keine Macht über mich, wenn sie dir richt wäre von oben herabgegeben. Darum, der mich dir überantwortet hat, der hat's größ're Sünde. Von dem an trachtete Pilatus, wie er ihn losließe.	When Pilate heard that word, he was even more afraid, and went again into the judgement hall and spoke to Jesus: Whence comest Thou? But Jesus gave no answer to him. Then Pilate said to him: Dost Thou not speak with me? Knowest Thou not that I have the power to crucify Thee and the power to release Thee? Jesus answered: Thou wouldst have no power over Me, if it had not been given down to thee from above. Therefore, he that delivered Me unto thee hath the greater sin. From then on, Pilate sought how he might release him.
No. 40 - Choral
Durch dein Gefängnis, Gottes Sohn, ist uns die Freiheit kommen Dein Kerker ist der Gnadenthron, Die Freistatt aller Frommen, Denn gingst du nicht die Knechtschaft ein, Müßt' unsre Knechtschaft ewig sein.	Through Thy captivity, O Son of God, freedom has come to us. Thy prison is the throne of mercy, the place of freedom for all pious people. For if Thou didst not go into bondage, our bondage must have been eternal.
No. 41 - Recitativ (Evangelist)
Die Juden aber schrieen und sprachen:	But the Jews cried out, saying:

Lässest du diesen los, so bist du des Kaisers Freund nicht, denn wer sich zum Könige machet, der ist wider den Kaiser.	If you let this man go free, then you are not Caesar's friend, for whoever makes himself a king, that man is against Caesar.
No. 43 - Recitativ (Evangelist, Pilate)
Da Pilatus das Wort hörete, führete er Jesum heraus, und setzte sich auf den Richtstuhl, and der Stätte die da heißet Hochpflaster, auf Ebräisch aber Gabbatha. Es war aber der Rüsttag in Ostern, um die sechste Stunde; und er sprichst zu den Juden: Sehet, das ist euer König! Sie schrieen aber:	When Pilate heard this saying, he led Jesus out, and sat down in the judgement seat in a place called the Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. It was the preparation day in Passover, about the sixth hour, and he said to the Jews: Behold, that is your King! But they cried out:

Weg, weg mit dem, Kreuzige ihn!	Away, away with Him! Crucify Him!
